Does HR’s mission end when the right talent is found?

Not yet. The next step is maintaining the enthusiasm of these talents to ensure their continued success, improve performance indicators, and increase productivity. Here, we can draw on the experience of Laszlo Bock, who managed HR at Google for over ten years. Based on his experience, he offered the following practical tips for maintaining employee motivation.

Tip 1: Promote Employee Psychological Safety Providing a safe work environment is essential for encouraging employees to take calculated risks without fear of failure, thus enabling them to leverage their skills and abilities. Studies at Google have shown that what distinguishes a successful team is employees feeling safe enough to ask each other questions and share opinions and information with their manager.

Tip 2: Encourage trust. This means creating an environment built on trust among employees, because the success of any business depends on the degree to which employees rely on each other. The higher the level of trust, the greater the productivity and quality of work. Google has focused on facilitating increased collaboration among employees by developing the Google-to-Googler (G2G) tool, which has been joined by more than six thousand employees to support each other in developing their professional skills.

Tip 3: Be clear. Providing clear and sufficient information about the work required goes a long way in helping employees understand and follow their roles to achieve team goals in a cohesive and accurate manner. Bock explains how Google ensures employees have access to all resources and information, even those belonging to executives, because the company believes employees will perform better if they can easily find the information they need.

Tip 4: Evaluate the Impact: Finally, always remember the purpose the team is working toward while valuing the impact it seeks. Team alignment around these goals provides the fuel that keeps the team resilient during difficult times. Conversely, a mismatch between these goals can lead to a misalignment of motivation and an imbalance in the effort exerted by all team members toward achieving the ultimate work goal.

In conclusion, gaining a better understanding of the factors influencing individual decision-making has become a goal pursued by many sectors. However, the human resources sector is still at the beginning of this journey. Therefore, it is important to take human behavior into account when designing and building recruitment strategies and employee support plans for all emerging and innovative companies.
